“Haus des Waldes”

Because it functions as an exhibition (entre, the new building has an entirely transparent half. Visitors are able to observe the sourrounding forest and study the influences of seasons and weather. An arched timber structure spans delicately over the exposition area, which can therefore beused in a very flexible way. All other functions are locatedin the two levels of the adjacent part of the building. The facade of these spaces is also articulated according to different needs. Strip windows alternate with bare wood panelling. All rooms which call for lower ceiling heights are grouped together in the two-storey, highly insulated part or the building; whereas the transparent exposition hall is able to react to different seasons aod weather conditions. This contrast is the basis of a passive solar engergy concept. The heat of the sun is used directly to warm the air in the building and accounts for a large part of the annual power demand. All massive areas, especially those which are in contact with soil, help to store the gained solar energy. These two systems get support from a small air-heating unit, which reacts only to very extreme weather conditions. The 120m² roof area is covered wilh photovoltaic cells. Thermal sun collectors heat Ihe water supply of the whole complex.

The Caprivi barracks have been changed in the context of revitalization to a new location of University of Applied sciences Osnabrueck. A goal of the draft was it to reduce the optically effective mass of the buildings of the new lectureroom and seminar building around the cityspatial quality ensembles protected to receive by the authorities. Therefore all wide seminar and lecture-room ranges become in a broadly stored single-storey building part under utilization of the existing topography accommodated. In extension of the past barracks place a new, spaciously working campus is reached in this way, which will be also spatially seized as city terrace by a three floors high, latch plate-like building.

Award „BDA-Preis Niedersachsen 2006“

The production area for different kinds of beers which is located in 1.000 m height above sea-level in the southern Black Forest was restructured and expanded due to a company expansion in the early 1990’s. The arrays for logistics and filling are arranged in 7.50 m high stories which are connected by vertical conveyors because of the limitations to the available building grounds. Both stories have at-grade entries according to the topographical conditions of the compound. With 11.0 x 11.0 m range the inserted ceiling is designed as a massive flat slab. Especially accentuated is the ca. 22.0 m broad roof structure made of filigree wood and steel elements to reduce the enclosed space as well as to underline the 100 m long building body. The air condition of the logistics center is completely covered in the buildings roof structure.

All the buildings are described in a concept “Everything is under one roof“. Expandable steel skeleton for a low-tech industrial building. All static necessary components of the construction are calculated to the limit. Brief training of the building envelope, which encloses an administration unit of 600 m². Planning and construction period of 9 months.

For the growing area of a producer for office furniture we developed a masterplan to achieve a more concise coverage. The existing structures were reconstructed in the first construction phase until 2001. This includes the preperations for the administration building and the dining hall. A three story airspace which permits a better illumination after removal of the massive inserted ceiling is a highlight of the Building. Different light moods can be set up through variable fins. The second part of the development and research centre was meanwhile suspended.The reconstruction of the company cuisine and canteen is another important step in this project. The concept allows further use of the room eg. as an assembly hall. Light woods and the use of plants in the inner and outer area create an inviting atmosphere for the employees of the company. The south-oriented glass structure in combination with the roof garden is an gladly used area of the employees.

Air Freight and Cargo Building

The former military section of the Straßbourg-Entzheim Airport (France) later became an aircargo hub which is used by France and Germany at the same time. At first a building for incoming and outgoing air-cargo was planned in the centre of the compound. The base of the several building segments is held by a steel structure which is 30 m broad and 70 m long without any supporting stand. The buildings of the asset are refurbished for logistic and air-cargo service businesses. The bodywork like casing of the building made of aluminium is characteristic for the building and creates a flawless intersection between the rooftop and walls. Wing-like profiles on roof-lights are used to support a natural ventilation of the building which works on the Venturi-effect. This is another identifying feature which already canbe seen from distance.

Sto AG

The additive and modular structure for the new distribution-hubs of the building material manufacturer Sto AG (Plasters and colour systems) can be seen as concept for several nationwide sites within a general cooperate design, which had been especially created for this task. Shared, expandable base structures for office, display and stock required the development of a rear ventilated cladding system made of recovered glass mounting plates.

Competence Centre for renewable resources

Straubing (Germany)

2005-2010 1. -3. Section

This competence centre for renewable resources is located in a former monastery garden near the city of Straubing. The further use and reconstruction in combination with the urban integration of existing structures is formative for the appearance of this complex especially the new buildings in their different construction stages like for example the central technicum in the first section with its laboratory attachments and the greenhouses. A third stage includes a interdisciplinary scientific laboratory. The core of this construction is going to be a wood-powered heating system with a maximum power output of 1,2 MW. Derived timber product is the predominant construction material of all supporting elements in the interior fitting.
